Liturgy & Worship
Sunday Mass 5:30PM
Sunday Mass is held in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb center each week of the fall and spring semester, unless otherwise announced in the weekly bulletin. Please consider sharing your gifts for liturgical ministry.
Opportunities for Prayer
If you’re looking for a quiet place for prayer, the CCM house has an upstairs meditation room. It is open anytime the house is open. You’ll find a bible, rosaries, and other prayer resources to borrow or some to take with you. There is also a book of prayer intentions for you to write in so that the community can keep your intentions is our prayer.
Rosary Group meets weekly–determined by participants schedules
Liturgical Ministry
We invite you to become a vital part of our worshipping community. We have an ongoing need for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EM’s), lectors, greeters, musicians, & singers. A desire to serve the community is the primary qualification and training is provided. EM’s must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Call Geri at the CCM house (757)440-9065 for details or e-mail her geri@ccm.hrcoxmail.com
Holy Days of Obligation
Holy Days of Obligation are observed in the local parish. We publish Mass times at two parishes nearby and usually try to organize car pools. If you’re planning to go and can drive, please let us know!
Service Opportunities
Catholic Campus Ministry offers students a chance to become involved in helping others, especially those in need. Through various projects and activities we seek to “love one another” as Christ calls us to do.
Some of our ongoing projects include:
Sandwich making for Catholic Worker
Twice a month we prepare sandwiches to be distributed to the “working poor” of Norfolk. They are the people who have jobs, but still find themselves with too little to survive. Would you like to coordinate this year’s effort, help shop for food, or just help spread mustard? Check our bulletin or calendar of events to find out when our next sandwich making date is!
Catholic Worker could also use volunteers to help distribute the food…….they start early….6AM three days a week. Contact Geri for more information about this.
Special projects
Thanksgiving baskets, visits to nursing homes and shelters, Christmas and Easter projects. Birthright Baby Showers and Trick or Treating for Canned Goods to benefit the Foodbank. New projects are always welcome for consideration. If you have a desire to help someone in need, and want help organizing an event we can make it happen!!
Retreats
Catholic Campus Ministry at ODU offers several opportunities to “retreat”… that is, get away from the chaotic schedules so many college students adopt as a temporary way of life. We offer local retreats, as well as diocesan sponsored retreats. Some are “twilight retreats”…. a few hours on one particular evening. Others are real “get aways”….3 or 4 days. Check one out this year!
Fall Community Beach Retreat
CCM fills a beach house at Sandbridge (in southern Virginia Beach) for a weekend of getting to know one another, prayer, good food, community building activities, and fun. Sign up early to reserve your space! Cost this year will be $25.
Encounter With Christ Retreat
Encounter With Christ is a diocesan sponsored retreat for undergraduate students throughout the state of Virginia. Students from many colleges and universities gather at Camp Bethel in Troutville, in the mountains of southwestern Virginia to grow in their understanding of living as a Catholic Christian in today’s world. They explore their own relationship with Christ and with the Church. During three days of talks, discussions, prayer, and recreation Christ’s presence is revealed in compelling ways.
Encounter With Christ Dates for 2009-2010
January 22-24, 2010
February 18-21, 2009
March 11-14, 2009
The cost for an Encounter With Christ Weekend is $100 which includes food and lodging. When CCM sends a group of students from ODU, we carpool and share expenses for gas. Financial assistance is available to anyone who would like to attend, but may be unable to do so due to cost. No one should miss this opportunity! Space is limited, so sign up early….see Geri for questions and more details.
Christian Formation
Catholicism Unwrapped
Dinner and discussion held each Thursday at 5:30pm. Join us for these Thursday evenings to gain insight and share how the “good news” sustains us through daily life. We welcome your gifts of meal preparation, too! If you want to volunteer to cook, contact the CCM house. Did we say the meal is “FREE”?
RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
RCIA is an ongoing formation process for those interested in becoming fully initiated members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process begins with a period of inquiry…a time of coming to know the community and seeking answers to questions you may have about faith. Inquirers meet with the RCIA team and sponsors from the community throughout the year on a weekly basis and participate as much as possible in the life of the Church on campus. After a period of catechesis and discernment, rites of acceptance and election are celebrated at the local parish, Blessed Sacrament. If you are interested in this process or know someone who is contact Geri at the CCM house or Sr. Regina Stupak at Blessed Sacrament (423-8305).
Other Opportunities
Music Ministry
Here’s a great way for you to share your love of music in the CCM community…we’re looking for pianists, guitarists, flutists, percussionists, and vocalists to help us joyfully celebrate our liturgies! We practice on Thursday evening at 7:00PM at the CCM house and meet at 4:50PM on Sunday afternoons to prepare for Mass.
Social Activities
There’s always something happening at Catholic Campus Ministry. Sunday suppers, movie nights, cookouts, day trips to Kings Dominion & Busch Gardens, or a good game of Trivial Pursuit are a few examples of how we make friends and build community.
Don’t miss our Open Mic Nites! Usually one each semester…a great showcase for the unbelievable talent this community has!
Ecumenical Activities
CCM strives to maintain a spirit of ecumenism by jointly sponsoring events with other ODU campus ministry groups.
Ministry Team
The CCM Ministry Team meets weekly at the CCM house Tuesdays at 7:30 PM. All are welcome to this meeting. We value your input, opinions, and ideas.
